Cikumas: The Origin

Lots of people have business ideas, but most rarely attempt to do something about them. Noah and Alex both IB students at an international school in Switzerland, were tired of remembering the different usernames and passwords that they had for various classes, for different purposes. It all started with this one idea: “Wouldn’t it be great to use just one platform that could enable our teachers to centralize assignment creation, classroom management and grading? One login for everything.”

So they pondered on this question to see if such a platform already exists, and if yes, why were they not using it at their school. This lead them to do extensive research on what is known as the vast universe of EdTech and to discover that while many software come close to being a one-stop shop, their designs and functionalities where not user friendly, and that every teacher, every subject, incorporates technology differently into their classes. Drawing on their experiences with the different software and on their research, Cikumas was born.

The wireframes of Cikumas was built on the savings of Alex’s monthly allowance that paid for a programmer to help code the first, and more meager version of the platform that we now know and love. This skeleton of Cikumas, with the support of their families and a teacher from their school, helped them to successfully pitch the idea to an angel investor. The past few months was a whirlwind with the final year of school, introducing Cikumas to teachers around the world, shaping the platform into what it is today through the hard work of a handpicked team of programmers. Not to mention, a few radio interviews and television shows along the way.

Cikumas has come a long way in just a year, but there is much more to come. In order to be the most classroom friendly platform, we will be working closely with educators to stay true to our promise: putting teachers at the heart of education. Finally, there is just small matter of passing the IB exams in Spring 2018 but Alex and Noah are ready for all challenges ahead.
